Gunshots in the vicinity of the Israeli Consulate in Munich were attempts at <x0... terrorist attacks”, German police and prosecutors said Thursday.
Police killed an 18-year-old Austrian after he had fired gunfire on five police officers in the southern German city. German police said there are no others injured.
Prosecutors said in a communiqué late Thursday that the attack is believed to have linked “to Israeli Consulate”.
About 500 police officers moved to the centre of Munich City, including special forces.
The attacker was armed with a long rifle and a clown, according to police.
The incident occurred on the anniversary of the Munich massacre, when Palestinian militants killed 11 Israelis during the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
Israel's Foreign Ministry said its employees were not in the building at the time of the incident Thursday, as the Consulate was closed because of a memorial ceremony for victims of the 1972 attack.
Bravaria Land Prime Minister Markus Soder said the incident could have “connection to” on the anniversary, but added that this should be clarified.
Germany's Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said the swift response of emergency services to Munich “sot could have prevented something terrible”.
“Allow me to be clear: antisemitism and Islam have no place here”, Scholz said. /rel
