Pacolli: Kurti Government Errors have allowed Serbia to emerge powerful from Banjska incident

Today it has been a year since the terrorist attack on Zvecan Banisk, where Sergeant Africa Bulnjak and several injured policemen were killed. Although weeks ago, the prosecution has filed charges against chief criminal Milan Radojcik and other persons involved, on the other hand the government is being criticised for not doing enough that the attack [...]

In an interview for Periscope, former Foreign Affairs Minister Behgjet Pacolli said the Government of Kosovo has exploited the attack for political gain.

“The Government's engagement in the dawning of the Banjska case has been weak and inconsistent. A year later, little concrete progress has been made to reveal the details of the attack before the world. Instead of advancing a full and transparent international investigation, the government seems more focused on using the case for political gain. A sincere effort has been missed to internationalise the incident and mobilise international support to hold Serbia responsible. This failure to raise Banjska's profile on the global scene reflects a strategic failure, as the case had the potential to expose Serbia's destabilising activities. From where there is no open-air dialogue, Kosovo goes into frequent dialogue after Banjsko accepting the draft association status and introducing the ibrit bridge as the subject of security. Kosovo lost a key opportunity to collect international support”, Pacolli said.

Pacolli, citing the continuing attacks of power on the Prosecution, said the government has lost the opportunity to present the case to international organisations.

“No, the government has failed to exploit this incident to effectively show Serbia's true face to the international community. Banjska could be a turning point to expose Serbia's aggressive policies and its actions against Kosovo. However, the government is more preoccupied with its domestic political agendas than with correspondinging the attack to diplomatic forums. They have missed several opportunities to present the case to international organisations such as the United Nations or the European Union, where Serbia's role in the attack could have been exposed. Moreover, by trying to influence the prosecution to produce weak and swift charges, the government has shown a lack of seriousness in prosecuting the responsible and creating the impression of political interference in investigations. Fortunately, the prosecution has not surrendered to these political pressures, which could have damaged Kosovo's arguments even more. But the damage to the international terrave has been done, Kosovo has not shown enough determination, allowing Serbia to go out without punishing”, Pacolli told Periscope.

Until Serbia has yet to be punished for the attack on Banjska, Pacolli blames the Government of Kosovo and, as he says, ” the Government's mistakes have allowed Serbia to emerge more powerful from Banjska incident”.

The fact that Serbia remains unpunished a year after the Banjska attack is a direct result of the Kosovo Government's poor response and its international isolation. Failure to build a strong international case and pushing for weak and political charges, the Government has strengthened Serbia's position. Instead of facing consequences, Serbia has become more powerful, using the Kosovo government's failures to consolidate its influence in international circles. A strong and strategic response from Kosovo could have isolated Serbia and weakened its regional power, but Government mistakes have allowed Serbia to emerge stronger from the Banjska incident. This is a clear mirror of how the lack of decisive leadership in Kosovo could lead to more dangerous consequences for regional stability”, Pacolli concluded.

Day after day, there has been amazhe at the tomb of Sergeant Africa Bunnjak from where it was called for Serbia to hand over criminal Milan Radojciq. / P ERISCOPY.
