Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the United Nations on Saturday that it is meaningless to ignore alternatives to Ukraine's peace proposals, warning the West of the danger of trying to fight “to win with a nuclear power of”.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Mr Lavrov criticised countries supporting Ukraine and Kiev's peace proposal.
Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022. Nine months later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced a ten-point peace plan to end the war, under the basic UN Charter and international law. Moscow rejected the proposal.
“I will not talk here about how meaningless and dangerous the very idea of trying to fight against a nuclear power, such as Russia”, Lavrov said.
“equally meaningless, Kiev's Western supporters pledge that there is no alternative to negotiations based on the notorious peace formula”.
Recalling Western allies' plans in the 1940s to destroy “” The Soviet Union, he accused the West of trying to make a “strategic framework” of Russia in Ukraine.
“The current Anglo-Saxon courts are not hiding their ideas. For now, it is true, they hope to defeat Russia by using Kiev's neo-Nazi illegal regime, but they are already preparing Europe to also introduce this suicide adventure”, Lavrov said.
Russia is also concerned about the Israeli attack on Beirut that killed Hezbollah's leader and that such “political killings” have become common, Lavrov said. / VOA
