Serbia has signed a contract to buy 12 fighter planes “Rafare” from France on Thursday, during a visit French President Emmanuel Macron made to Belgrade.
As part of the deal, Serbia will take nine planes with one seat and three by two by 2029. At the joint media conference, Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has said the deal is worth around $2.7 billion.
French combat aircraft is said to replace “Russian MIIG”
In April, France was conditioning the transaction with Serbia on these planes to review Serbia's reports with China and impose sanctions on Russia. It was also said that France's request has been to ease tensions and normalise relations with Kosovo.
Serbia's investments in the purchase of weapons have been growing steadily in recent years. From 2012 to 2023, Serbia's military budget tripled to 1.4 billion euros. In the period from 2014 to 2023, Serbia has spent 2.67 billion euros on the purchase of arms ė mainly for the purchase of the Chinese antiaircraft system FK-3 and Russian Mi-17 and Mi-35 helicopters.
