Italian prosecutor Ammbrogio Cartosio has opened investigation into murder by carelessness following the death of British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and six other people.
They found death when the luxury yacht, 56m long, Bayesian, sank as a result of a powerful storm that struck the early morning Portiqueon near Palermo.
Mr. Cartosio, head of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Termin Imerese, said that while the yacht was hit by a very unexpected meteorological phenomenon, there was reliable “data” that the deaths and shipwreck of the ship were carried out by negligence.
So far, the investigation is not central to any individual he added during a press conference.
Among those who lost their lives was Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. Fifteen people survived, among them Mr Lynch's wife, whose company you owned Bayesian, and the captain of the yacht.
It would be even more painful if the investigation showed that “was caused by actions that were not in accordance with the responsibilities of all”, prosecutor Cartosio said.
Captain James Cutfield and other survivors were questioned this week by authorities. None of them publicly commented on how the yacht sank.
Raffalle Cammarano, another prosecutor who spoke at the same press conference, said that when authorities had questioned Mr. Cutfield and that he had been extremely cooperative “”.
The drowning of the luxury yacht has surprised marine experts who say that a vehicle such as Bayesian, built by the Italian high-level yacht manufacturer Perini, should have resisted the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as fast as it did.
Shipwrecking will help investigators determine what happened, but surgery is likely to be complex and costly. / VOA
