Goffus: Adding KFOR troops is not a solution to co-ordination is vital

Assistant Secretary General NATO for Operations, Thomas Goffus, has stayed in Kosovo on Thursday, and the day before even in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From both countries it has reiterated NATO's commitment to peace and stability in the “region of strategic importance to the Alliance”. Goffus has mentioned increasing the number of troops in [...]
Goffus has cited increasing the number of troops in Kosovo from last year after tensions in the north, but has declared this is not the solution to long-term stability.
Over the past year, we have increased the number of troops in Kosovo, in order to manage, unfortunately, a more challenging security environment and ongoing tensions. This shows, once again, the steadfast political commitment of NATO allies to sustainable security throughout Kosovo and the Western Balkans. Although unfortunately necessary at the moment, more troops are not the solution to long-term peace and stability in Kosovo”, Goffus said, Goffus reported. NATO through a statement to the media Friday.
Furthermore, it has added that the solution to the situation is political, citing Kosovo-Serbia dialogue here. It has called for implementation of existing agreements.
Unexpected and uncoordinated actions, especially in northern Kosovo, can increase the risk of violence, undermine the security of people in Kosovo and increase the risk facing KFOR troops. This raises NATO allies' concern for the stability of the region, Kosovo's security and their troops' security”, he has stressed.
Goffus called it <x0-medicine” time and effective co-ordination with NATO of the international community while citing the Ibri Bridge issue here.
While seeking responsibility for the violent events in Zvecan and Banjsk last year, he has said that the co-ordinated “actions, along with divisive rhetoric, promote tensions that endanger peace and stability in Kosovo”.
There is an opportunity and a need to take positive steps towards escalation and lowering pressure, through constructive dialogue for sustainable resolution”, Goffus has declared.
