The European Union has called for “maximum maintenance” following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, a development for which the international community fears it could fuel tensions in the already troubled region and eliminate any fragile hope of reaching a ceasefire. The Gaza War.
“We call on all sides to exercise maximum content and avoid any further escalation”, said Peter Stano, European Commission spokesman for foreign affairs, wrote foreign media.
No country and no nation can benefit from a further escalation in the Middle East”, he added.
Hayeh was killed Wednesday in a pre-day air strike in Tehran, where he had travelled to take part in the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Peseskian.
