The 15-year-old leadership of Bangladesh's prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has ended on Monday, as she has escaped deadly protests that are taking place several days on the streets of this state.
The military has said it has taken power and will form a temporary government.
Hasina has attempted since early July to suppress national protests against her government, but in the end she has been forced to leave, as at least 100 people have been killed on Sunday in protests.
Bangladesh Army Chief Walker - Uz-Zaman has said of the state broadcaster Monday that Hasina has resigned and the military will form the provisional Government.
The state has suffered a lot, the economy has been hit, many people have been killed. It's time to end violence”, Walker said, dressed in military uniform.
“I hope the situation will improve after my” speech, he said.
He has said he will talk with Bangladesh's president to form Government in this South Asian state of 170 million people.
It has not been known whether he will be in charge of the government.
Zaman has said he will talk with the main opposition parties and members of civil society, but not with Hasina's party.
Hasina, 76-year-old, has left Bangladesh by helicopter, said a source of AFP news agency, after protesters entered her palace in Daka.
Protests have initially begun after the return of a quota scheme for public employment, but have later expanded against the Government. / REL
