The US through its ambassador to Kosovo, Jeff Hovenier, has raised its concerns that there is danger that the opening of the bridge over Iber could trigger the security situation, saying they do not want their soldiers under KFOR to be threatened by the unilateral actions of Kurti Government.

The American diplomat in an interview for Radio Free Europe noted that the issue is taken very seriously and calls on the Kosovo government to take these concerns into account.

“We believe this risk increases the threat, the possibility of violence and other problems, both for the local community and NATO soldiers, including American soldiers working to ensure peace and security in Kosovo. We take very seriously any action that can affect the security and protection of American soldiers working to support Kosovo. Our hope is that the Government will hear this and take into account these concerns”.

Ambassador Havenier said the US has been challenged by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his government in some respects.

“I have to say that the quality of our partnership is not what we would hope to be on some of these issues related to the way it handles the north and how it manages the dialog”.

He added that the government's uncoordinated actions in the north diminish US enthusiasm to support Kosovo on its Euro-Atlantic path. Havenier noted that the US has been challenged by Albin Kurti's stances.

I can't talk about how he thinks of us. I can only say that from the perspective of the United States government, we have been challenged by the prime minister and his government in some ways”.

But this is not the first time Kurti has not listened to the advice of Kosovo's friends and has largely to do with Kosovo government activities in the northern part of the country.

Initially, the conversion of Serbian illegal plates operating in the north had sparked serious concerns from the US, but other QUINT countries as well.

In October of last year, Havenier had raised concerns about the process.

He's in an interview for RTV KIM had said the United States of America thinks the deadline for car registration in RKS plates by Serbs should be extended.

Hovnier had indicated that the US are not against this decision and see it as reasonable and in line with Brussels' agreements, but had said on the other hand that the deadline should be extended.

It is clear that there has been little demand to do so (re-registering vehicles) so far. The United States government believes that the Kosovo Government's decision to allow people living in Kosovo to run vehicles that are registered in Kosovo and that setting Kosovo license plates is not an unreasonable requirement and that this decision is in accordance with the Brussels accords, but we have expressed our concerns from the beginning and continue to express for the implementation deadline.”, the American diplomat had said.

My “message to the Kosovo government was that we believe it will take more time, that we are not enthusiastic for the short term, because it is difficult for people and is tiring. We hope there's a delay. That was part of our conversation, I can't say whether it will happen, because it is asked what will happen, but it is the decision of the Kosovo government”, he had said.

The government headed by Albin Kurti had continued with other decisions regarding the country's north and one of them was the decision to ban the dinar for Serbs in Kosovo.

The move had only created and deepened the crisis between the US and Kosovo.

As never before, the American diplomat was harsh in his statements.

Kosovo's “decision on the dinar has affected our relations”, he had said, among other things.

US Ambassador to Pristina Jeff Hovenier had said Kosovo's decision to implement the Kosovo Central Bank's regulation to ban the Serbian dinar has affected the quality of relations between the United States and the Government of Kosovo.

A few days after the dinar ban, the government headed by Albin Kurti made another decision that reached Kosovo's friendly countries.

Their constant demand was that for any action especially in northern Kosovo due to security reasons, there should be a co-ordination with EU countries and the United States of America.
