Full Message to the French Presidency

It was one of those for whom writing is a war; those whose every word is cut off from silence, those who each row risks adding to the minutes, those who every novel threatens to be the epithephus of their career.

For he lived and created as a free man, in a place which was not: Postwar Soviet Albania, under Enver Hoxha's iron yoke.

But the discovery of literature opened up to the adolescent the shores of a new world. Reading Servantes, Homer, and Gogol, he built his intellectual resistance. As much as the indoctrination of his literature professors slipped on him at the University of Tirana, as well as at the Gorki Institute in Moscow, the temple of official literature. Instead of joining the ranks of “the elite body of socialist realism”, as it was called, he joined the freedom-style resistance fighters. His great novel in 1963, the late army general, was tolerated because his theme was disturbing, his dream prevented communist labels -- the exhumation of soldiers from World War II before a priest and an Italian soldier, under Albanian power. The rain that keeps falling. On the other hand, the Monster, in 1965 and the winter of the great loneliness, in 1973, did so because he denounced the intellectual oppression of Tirana of time. Twice accused of inciting rebellion, he underwent a period of deep - arm labor in the village for which he reported.

After the Dream Palace, in 1981, the axe fell: “armic of the people”. Forbidden by publication, he decided to seek political asylum. So he turned to the land that had been the first to translate his books, the first to become passionate about his work beyond his borders. With his publisher, Claude Durand, head of Éditions Fayard, he planned a major escape to France in 1990, another blow to the wall of dictatorship: Tirana, his departure led to pre student protests in more than 40 years.

Since then, from France's capital to that of a Albania turned democracy and finally returning to itself, he shared his existence between words and things, people and countries. From his walks in re-discovered Tirana, from this table in Rostand café, where he placed his notebook and pen every morning, permanent texts were born at the crossroads of myths and worlds, from the imagination of the Capops pyramid in Tirana's. Between the gates of Luxembourg, and the coast of Cornwall, and the walls of Troy. They constantly remind us of how Europe is the continent of the joint, how its history is a common story.

The president of the Republic greets a free spirit who participated in this great wake of the people who raised the iron curtain and honored France by taking it as asylum of its creation. He addresses his heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, his readers and the Albanian people”.
