The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has reacted sharply after Kosovo's Assembly adopted the Bill for the Independent Commission for Media (KPM) today in opposition to its EU requirements, as well as the Council of Europe.
In a reaction to the media Thursday following the vote in the Parliament's KPM draft country, the OSCE said it is concerned about some aspects of the bill.
The OSCE's “Mission to Kosovo is concerned about some aspects of today's adoption by the Kosovo Assembly of the new Law for the Independent Media Commission (KPM)”, the OSCE report said.
“The KPM plays a key role in the regulatory framework of Kosovo media. Its ability to act independently and professionally has been the key to its credibility and authority. International experts for media rights gave, on behalf of the Council of Europe, the European Union and the OSCE, detailed recommendations for linking the law with international standards. Unfortunately, however, most of these recommendations are not reflected in the law adopted”, said in response.
The OSCE mission said it remains committed to supporting Kosovo in bringing about its legislation to meet the highest international standards.
The Vetevendosje movement, by majority of votes in the Kosovo Assembly without the opposition, has adopted today the MKP Bill in opposition to the European Union's demands.
