Former House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has backed Kamala Harris to ensure the party's nomination for the November presidential election.
She is one of the highest figures to have provided support to US Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for re-election amid concerns from the figure within the Democratic Party that he could not defeat Republican Donald Trump.
Pelosi said it offers “enthusiastic support” Harris' efforts to win the party's nomination to compete in the November elections.
After Biden's withdrawal, many senior democratic officials soon lined up behind Harris.
Harris, who has received Biden's support, so far is the only one who has declared its candidacy for the presidential race and is working to win the support of most democratic delegates.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was seen as a potential candidate, is among a group of governors who offered their support for Harris on July 22nd.
Among them is senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly, governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, Kentucky Guvernato, Andy Beshear, governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Pennsylvania Mayor Josh Shapiro.
More than 700 delegates have told the Associated Press or have announced that they plan to support Harris in the National Assembly of Democrats, which will be held from 19 August to 22 August in Chicago, where the party's presidential candidate will be officially appointed.
Under new regulations recently imposed by the National Committee of Democrats, 1,976 delegates must offer support for a candidate to win the nomination.
If Harris wins the nomination, she should then elect a candidate for vice president and undertake a major political operation to strengthen her candidacy while the elections are over 100 days away.
After Biden's withdrawal, Harris pledged he would work to unite the Democratic Party “to defeat Donald Trumpin” the republican candidate for president.
Meanwhile, on July 22nd, during an event at the White House, Harris said that Biden's legacy is “unsurpassed in modern history” ./rel
