O'Brien before the Senate: Insulated Dodik, Croatia, Serbia face division of Srpska, change of borders

Assistant Secretary of State James O'Brien has witnessed before the Commission for Foreign Affairs in the American Senate. O'Brien has talked about war in Ukraine, Chinese influence, and also about the Western Balkan region, writes Gazeta Express. O'Brien has said that in the past two years there has been a possibility that there were no such thing as [...]

O'Brien has said that in the last two years, there has been a possibility that there were no such thing before, that states can join the common EU market and that there is progress towards membership. He has mentioned Albania, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro as also NATO member states, saying he hopes these three states will make progress.

The senior US official has also been asked about what the US is doing in relation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Milorad Dodik's efforts at partition. O'Brien has said Dodik is isolated and that his efforts to separate from Bosnia and Herzegovina have political backing.

Here O'Brien has mentioned Croatia as a country that has said that he will recognise “Reblica Srpske” if he divides and the president of Serbia, which O'Brien says is already beginning to speak publicly that Serbia will change its borders. Assistant Secretary of State has said Dodik is isolated.

“Dodik is isolated and he has no political support when talking about partition. Croatia openly says it will accept it and so a neighbour fled and Serbia says it will change borders, that we will trust in the originals, and we see that something like this Vucic has started to say publicly. So Dodik's the only”, O'Brien said, reports Express.

Assistant Secretary of State has also spoken of sanctions imposed on Milorad Dodik, saying they have already begun to cause problems and that the leaders of the “Republika Srpska” are contracting the budget.

And if you just listen to him at his latest press conference today, sanctions are causing him financial problems and so he has less and less money. What he is forced to do because he refuses to engage through central power mechanisms that should be part of the government's payments. It goes and tries to borrow from China, Russia, Hungary and occasionally from Serbia. And this is getting more and more difficult for him to”, O'Brien said away.

At this session at the Foreign Affairs Commission, specific questions have been asked concerning Kosovo and Serbia, nor has O'Brien himself mentioned the dialogue process between two states.
