The average global air temperature on the surface Sunday reached 17,09 degrees Celsius slightly higher than the previous record set last July of 17,08 degrees Celsius.
The heat waves have affected large parts of the United States, Europe and Russia during the past week.
Copernicus confirmed to Reuters that the average daily temperature record set last year seemed to have broken on Sunday, in their record extending in 1940.
Last year had four days in a row that broke the record from July 3rd to July 6th, as climate change, driven by fossil fuels, brought extreme heat across the northern hemisphere.
Every month since June 2023 lCU has now been ranked the most hot of the planet since the beginning of the records, compared to the corresponding month in previous years, says Copernicus, Reuters writes.
