Melon, who has been leading the right-wing government since 2022, made this announcement during his meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, as Rome is aiming to improve trade reports with Beijing after leaving the Chinese initiative “Brez and the” last year. This initiative, which essentially has investments in infrastructure, is Chinese President Xi Jinping's main project.
The Italian leader said the five-day visit “demonstrates the will to launch a new phase, to resume our bilateral co-operation”. The action plan, which was signed during the visit, aims to find new forms of co-operation, she said.
The memorandum for industrial co-operation signed by Italy and China “includes strategic sectors of industry, such as electrical mobility and renewable resources”, Mellon said.
Melon, who views Chinese investments as a way to boost Italy's economic growth, will also meet with Xia and the highest lawmaker in China, Zhao Leigh, who is third in leadership hierarchy.
In 2019, Italy became the only state of the group of the seven most industrialized states (G7) that joined the “Bresei initiative and street”, but withdrew from the initiative last year.
