“The decision to regret # The EU for recognition of passports issued by Serbian parallel/legal structures in Kosovo” has written on X.
The European Union Council has decided to remove visas from Kosovo Serbs who own Serbian passports issued by Serbia's Co-ordination Directorate.
The EU announced that adopting the new regulation annuls “the exception that was implemented earlier”.
“Today, the Council of the EU adopted a regulation ensuring that the entire Western Balkan region is subject to the same visa regime, cancelling the exemption applied earlier to Serbian passport holders, issued by Serbia's Co-ordination Directorate”, it is said at the EU announcement.
The bloc announces that the decision will be implemented after it takes effect (on the 20th day after publication in the EU Official Journal).
At the end of the EU statement, “from December 2009, holders of Serbian biometric passports were exempt from visa requirements when traveling to the Schengen” area.
The European Commission had proposed abolishing visas for the owners of these passports in November last year, and this was supported by the European Parliament in April of this year, despite opposition from Kosovo.
Kosovo does not recognise the passports Serbia releases for Kosovo Serbs and its owners cannot travel with them from Pristina Airport.
