Kosovo Statistics Agency Director Avni Kastrati's taskmaker has declared that the number of Serbs registered in the population registration process, which has ended in May this year, is around 360,000, but a part of this community has boycotted the process.
In an interview for Kosovo priss, Kastrati warns fines for all those who have refused to be part of the census process, meanwhile speaking to the Serb community, says those who were not registered had pressure.
The number of Serbs we've managed to register is about 35-36 thousand approximately, data we haven't published yet. We're talking about the number of Serbs in the south, but there's also a part that's registered north on this number. A part of the Serb community in the north, the destructive part, did not participate against our attempt, three times we have selected recorders, select a team, get on the ground. They had the pressure, they didn't participate, part of it. Even the statistics will make an assessment according to the criteria, international standards, and the final data to be released in December will be included with other indicator”, Kastrati said.
Although the registration process had been postponed for a week longer, Kastrati says that only a small number of citizens exploited the right.
Kastrati has also made known the percentage of the population that has remained unregistered according to preliminary data.
The preliminary data we've received is around 0.02 percent of the population that's not registered. We estimate that 99.8 percent are registered. This is good because very few countries are able to outdo 98 percent in the world. If in the end when we make the quality and inclusion report, it proves that Kosovo manages to register over 99.8 percent that we assume will be among the top states with inclusion. Those left unregistered will see the law and believe that only those who refused will have punishments according to the law, but those who haven't had the opportunity for various reasons have not been well in health or anything else, the” measures will not be taken, Kastrati said.
Kastrati said they will have more detailed tests in September.
The non-registered will be fined in the months and years to come when they need support from institutions, documentation and other issues... if he didn't participate in the census, you'll get a grant, if you're not registered you can't count on winning that grant, otherwise as the first way you should go to pay the punishment you didn't participate in the census... While physical persons, I'm not talking about the Serb community in the north, those who didn't participate, because it's the other issue, but the rest of the communities in the south, we appreciate that the maximum is about 2000 or 2,500 that didn't participate in the census, but a large part of them for different reasons of work, studies, health aspects, were not resident during the census time... In September we have a more detailed analysis, neither do we have the data as long as it was denial<1>, he said.
Kosovo has 1,586,659 residents, according to Kosovo Statistics Agency preliminary data. The DSF director's task officer says the final census data is scheduled to be published by the end of this year, and there is no expected to be major differences from preliminary data.
