Dialogue, Kurt conditions, Association: What did Ambassador Havenier say last night?

US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Havenier spoke about relations with the Kurti Government last night.

He said the US supports Kosovo to take its rightful place in the European family of states, but according to him, progress is needed for these achievements in the dialogue.

“We absolutely believe this is the fate of Kosovo and we will fully and enthusiastically support its advance into European institutions such as the European Union, the Council of Europe and Euro-Atlantic institutions, as a different relationship with NATO and in the end, we see NATO member Kosovo”.

But, as we have already talked about, to achieve these things, progress is needed in the EU-attensible dialogue. This is the way to advance that goal. Last week, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, during his stay in Brussels for the dialogue, imposed three conditions for meeting Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq: signing the Base Agreement, withdrawing the letter with which Serbia officially refused to implement the agreement with Kosovo, and handing over to Kosovo Milan Radojic, suspected of organising the armed attack on Banjsk.

Vuciq refused to accept his terms, and the meeting failed.

US Ambassador Jeffrey Havenier was asked about these three conditions. Diplomat Hovenier responding to this question stressed the importance of Kurti and Vuciq finding the political will and common language to move the process forward.

“I would say that the continued advice of the United States government on this and the previous governments of Kosovo are to engage in dialogue facilitated by the EU in a way that is constructive, which is active, that takes this issue with some urgency. And that brings the process forward. Show the political will to contribute actively, constructively, and constructively. I would say that any conditions or requirements that hinder face-to-face negotiations do not meet all these criteria. Hovenier said the US expects the government of Kosovo to take any action to send the draft status quo to the Constitutional Court, saying “this is the government's choice”.
