Today the “Junts” Catalonas initiative for recognition of Kosovo by Spain is voted

The Catalan party's parliamentary group “Junts” plans to cast the vote at the Spanish Congress' plenary session held today, a non-legitive proposal with which the Spanish government wants to recognise Kosovo as a sovereign state.

This initiative argues that Kosovo is “a legal and democratic state of some 1.7 million residents, which is recognised as an independent state by over 100 countries, including 22 EU members, broadcast Clankosova.tv.

Responding to the reasonings of five EU states that still recognise Kosovo's independence, among which is Spain, “Junts” has recalled that the International Court of Justice ( SEND) decided in July 2010 that Kosovo's “declaration of independence has not violated international law” and that there is no rule preventing it from continuing as such.

Spain's “refusal to recognise a state that used its legitimate right to self-rule is an obstacle to the European policy of involvement of the Western Balkans in the EU, and this is a factor of destabilising the area into a context marked by war in Ukraine that this part of Europe is experiencing it with particular anxiety”, say by “Junts” in the commentary memorandum.

According to this party“it is not acceptable that the Spanish state shares the same strategy as Russia, China or Belarus for refusing to recognise Kosovo”, especially when, according to the initiative, in which “Europe Press” had access, “Spain already has indirect relations with Kosovo” and since January past “the government has been forced to recognise Kosovo passports because Kosovo has joined the exclusion regime for short stays in the Schengen” area.

For all these reasons, <x0Juts” considers that “in support of the efforts being made by the institutions and the people of Kosovo to protect their right to exist as an independent state, the Spanish state must give up its refusal and must continue with the immediate recognition of the Republic of Kosovo”.

In that sense, the text proposes that Congress should encourage “Government to recognise the Republic of Kosovo as sovereign state”.
