It becomes known that the European Court of Justice (GJED) has ordered Hungary to pay a 200m-euro fee for the country's restrictions on asylum law.
Furthermore, Hungary will have to pay 1m euros for each late day.
As reported, the money will be dropped automatically from Hungary's partition into the EU budget, Euronews writes.
“Failure to meet obligations constitutes an unprecedented and extremely serious violation of the EU law”, the GED said in a statement.
The dispute dates back to December 2020, when the court first ruled that Hungary, under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, had limited access to asylum procedures for those seeking international protection in the country.
Hungarian authorities were accused of unlawful detention of applicants, violating their right to stay on national territory.
While Hungary ignored the 2020 decision, the European Commission launched a new legal action that resulted in the latest judgment.
The judges concluded that Hungary has deliberately ignored “the advancement of genuine co-operation” and that the “deliberately avoids” application of the bloc's asylum legislation.
“This behavior poses a serious threat to the unity of the EU law, which has an extremely serious impact on both private interests, especially the interests of asylum seekers, as well as on public interest”, judges said.
By contrast, since coming to power, Orban has embraced a harsh attitude towards migration, exacerbating tensions with Brussels.
Last month, the country voted against any files included in the New Pact for Migration and Asylum.
