Werner Hoyer, former president of the European Investment Bank, confirmed Monday that he is under investigation by the EU public prosecutor for corruption and abuse.
Hoyer, the charges have described as groundless and groundless “”, Euronews.com reports, broadcast Klakosova.tv.
He said he would fully co-operate with the investigation of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), which relates to compensation paid for a former EIB employee.
“The charges against me are absurd and groundless”, Hoyer said in an email-sent statement.
I now expect them to be fully investigated and clarified and asked the EIB to co-operate fully with EPO. I am also fully co-operating with EPO and request a complete clarification of the facts from there”, he added.
In the statement sent through his lawyer, the investigation reportedly concerns a staff agreement signed by Hoyer during the time he was president, but that he had no role in negotiating.
The legal requirements for the launch of a criminal investigation by EPO are very low”, his lawyer, Nikolaos Gazeas, said, adding that “was not uncommon in legal terms” for a signatory to become subject to an investigation.
