The chief opponent opposes the CEC: Regras is a substitute for the unseen color in the matrix

The Central Election Commission at the last meeting made a decision to approve the removal of a stop to the finger, which, instead, would be used in magnetic colors. This was rejected by the executive director of the Kosovo Democratic Institute, Ismet Kryeziu, who said citizens and political leaders should reject such a decision.

Kosovo has achieved considerable progress in building a functional democracy and in holding free and fair elections. Why today the CEC has to make decisions that could potentially violate civil rights. Last week's decision by the CEC to replace the unseen color with the matrix color is regrain. Citizens and political parties should oppose this CEC decision”.

According to Kryeziu, privacy is violated by the magnetic colors that are visible for more than 72 hours.

“We, as we have the right to participate in an election process, also preserve it and the right not to participate in elections. It's a guaranteed constitutional right. This right that we had vulnerable to the invisible color that could only be seen with ultraviolet light, thus protecting our privacy as voters.
The magnetic color is visible for at least 24 hours and can last up to 72 hours or more. Moreover, this color is resistant to water washing and ordinary detergents, sometimes to stronger chemicals, making it difficult to remove it in a short period of time. ”

On the other hand, he wrote that with the CEC aimed, there could be stigmatizing pressure.

And I believe that, because by this color on our finger, we're going to be exposed to a general public, and everyone who sees us is going to know if we voted or not. The right to vote is a private right for which there is no reason to know the general public. Now with the CEC aimed, we can submit to a stigmatizing pressure and be under unwanted social pressure. Put aside other pressures, potentially made by political parties to vote and prove whether we have voted. ”

He has said such practices are found in countries with unstable stories like Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq and Congo.

“In the Western Balkan states, nor in EU countries is the use of magnetic color not practical, since most of them have adopted advanced voter registration systems and other measures to ensure the integrity of the elections. Why Kosovo, after many parties of free and fair elections, has to put in place these practices, which are mostly used in countries like Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq, Congo and so on. countries that have unstable political and electoral stories, often marked by violence and fraud.
So, compared to some of the countries mentioned, Kosovo has a different context and a more stable path towards consolidation of democracy”.
