Israeli war cabinet head Benny Gantz resigned from the Israeli emergency government on Sunday.
He announced his resignation, criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah.
The government's “removal is a complex and painful decision”, GANTZ said in a televised statement.
“Netanyah prevents us from moving forward to a real victory (in Gaza). That's why we're leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with a whole heart of”, he added.
GANTZ, viewed as Netanyah's main political rival, was originally expected to resign on Saturday.
This marked his self-imponsed deadline to leave the government if Netanyahu did not set out a new plan for the Gaza war and the future of the enclave.
He postponed a planned press conference after reports of the Israeli operation were released to rescue four hostages in central Gaza, writes CNN, quoted Klankosova.tv.
GANTZ's departure gives a blow to Netanyah, which faces mounting international pressure to end the Gaza conflict, mass daily protests in Israel and increased domestic political pressure.
