The Democratic Party of Kosovo urged parliamentary political parties Monday support for a motion to disseminate Kosovo's parliament next week as a way to lead the country to early elections.
You know that as the only parliamentary group we don't have that power in the Kosovo Parliament, we've consistently said all the damage and consequences we're suffering today as citizens of this country and as a state due to extremely weak and degrading governance, and it's good to have this agreement together or this common language that we've had as opposition finalise with a session that was to be held next week” Democratic Party of Kosovo parliamentary group chief Abelard Tahiri said.
The motion could be raised with the signatures of 40 deputies, while 80 votes in the 120-seat parliament are needed. If MPs agree on the distribution of parliament, then the president should announce early elections that should be held more than 45 days after their proclamation.
The Democratic Party said the distribution of parliament before May 30th would enable the elections to be held at the end of June or early July.
The Democratic Party initiative followed a meeting last week between Democratic Party Chairman Memli Krasniqi and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, in which it has also been discussed in the new elections.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said after that meeting that he is ready to open discussions with opposition parties in the country to announce new parliamentary elections.
The head of the parliamentary group of the ruling Vetevendosje movement Mimoza Kusari Lila said today that her subject is willing to support the dissolution of parliament in the event it is backed by all opposition parties.
“Yet we cannot do this only with an opposition parliamentary group. The opposition must be unified in its demand, after all, the opposition is what calls for election or change of governance while considering that this government has met all conditions for a full and regular mandate”, Mrs. Kusari Lila said.
The current government mandate expires at the beginning of 2025.
The opposition Democratic League of Kosovo has called for Prime Minister Albin Kurti's resignation as a condition for the distribution of parliament.
The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo said today that the distribution of parliament in this phase implies a way out for Albin Kurti's government.
“Some form of taking blame from the Parliament for the government's failure. So the break-up should come only when we manage to download an harmful government, only when it resigns and with a statement or a mouth that will withdraw, but not in any situation for the Kosovo Assembly to assume a responsibility that does not belong to”, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo parliamentary group chief Besnik Tahiri said.
But the resignation, observers say, does not automatically imply new elections because without a preliminary agreement the country's president would be forced to give a new opportunity to the ruling party to form a new government.
However, new elections have already become part of discussions, and many independent analysts claim they will be held in early summer or autumn, but ahead of presidential elections in the United States.
The Democratic Party said Monday that failure for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe and worsening relations with Western allies are an additional argument to lead the country to new elections.
Kosovo was not put in line last week for membership in the Council of Europe, as part of the member states reiterated that the condition for Kosovo's progress is to take steps to establish the Association of Serb majority municipalities. / VOA
