EU Office Ambassador to Pristina Thomas Szunyog has declared that the issue of membership in the Council of Europe does not depend on the European Union, but on the member states of the KiE, which according to him, set the conditions for Kosovo to become a member.
He made these comments during a visit to Suhareka today.
Szunyog has declined to comment whether association is a condition for Kosovo's entry into the European organisation.
I can't talk about the Council of Europe issue. The EU is not a member. It is up to member states to decide what conditions to decide to become a member of”.
The failure to include Kosovo in the KiE agenda comes after the letter of three European leaders sent Prime Minister Albin Kurti through which association is required as a condition for the country's membership in the Council of Europe.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Mellon and French President Emmanuel Macron, said in letter that “has a real risk that without decisive progress in association, Kosovo's application to the Council of Europe will not receive sufficient support from member states”.
