An assailant shot Ficon with four bullets from the vicinity, when the prime minister was greeting some supporters during a government meeting in Handlova town on May 15th, reports the agency. “.
The attack had left the 59-year-old politician in serious condition and undergone two operations, one had lasted five hours.
The attacker, identified as Juraj C., 71, was caught at the scene immediately and charged with attempted assassination charges.
The incident has highlighted the deep polarisation of politics in the Central European state of 5.4 million people.
It was the first attempted murder of a European political leader in more than 20 years.
