Since the total invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Russia's relations with the West fell to the lowest possible level since the end of the Cold War.
This, after Ukraine's Western allies supported its fight against Russian invading forces, helping with weapons and logistics.
This is the first time the Russian Defence Ministry publicly proclaims exercises involving nuclear tactical weapons.
Ukrainian officials have been criticised for failing to dig holes and build protective fortifications much faster.
The announcement came after Britain and France made several statements that seemed to indicate greater involvement in the more than 2-year conflict.
“To increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces, with the aim of carrying out combat missions, the General Staff has begun preparations for maintaining exercises in the near future of”, the Russian Defence Ministry said through a statement distributed on the Telegram app.
“During the exercise, a series of activities will be conducted to practice the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons”, the statement said.
It also stresses that the exercise has been ordered by President Vladimir Putin.
The role of strategic nuclear weapons is to hit enemy targets off the front line, while nuclear tactical weapons have been created to be used in the battlefields.
Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.
The exercise aims to boost the Russian Army's capabilities “to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state”, in response to the provocative “declarations and threats of Western officials to the Russian Federation”, it is said in a statement, without further details.
Last week, France's President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the statement that his country cannot rule out sending troops to Ukraine to help him in the war.

Officials in the United Kingdom, meanwhile, appeared to give Kiev the green light to use long-range weapons of action sent to Ukraine to strike targets within Russia.
So far in conflict, Great Britain has given instructions to Ukraine, suggesting that long-range weapons be used only within Ukraine's sovereign territory.
At the weekend, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said “NATO is preparing for a possible battle of” with Russia, and cited exercises by the Steadfast Defender military alliance as “evidence” for this.
These exercises, which will continue this month, include over 90,000 NATO troops.
NATO has said that, during them, it will practice how American troops can reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and the eastern side of the alliance in case of any conflict. / REL/
