Kosovo Journalists' Association Chairman (AGK), Xhemajl Rexha, has declared that the Government of Kosovo has influenced that the report of “Reporters without Borders” to list Kosovo 19 positions below as regards media freedom.
At a media conference, Rexha said the report in question identifies the government's denigration campaign against media and journalists.
This campaign, according to him, is designed to lower the level of public confidence in the media.
The “in recent years shows the greatest regress, for 19 positions. This ranking may not be a surprise to journalists and media regarding what we have experienced in the last year, but it should be an alarm for those who have influenced. Most of all, I mean the Government of Kosovo. The report of Reporters without Borders identifies the government's denigrating campaign against the media and journalists to downplay the effect of their work and lower the public's level of confidence in media”, he said.
The security of journalists has been a concern and this year. There have been 30 attacks on journalists in the north, violated the journalists' physical integrity. We have also had physical attacks on women's journalists in Pristina... It is up to the government to improve this ranking by not sending the new KPM law to approval, but by engaging in a serious commitment, with civil society taking into account the” remarks, he said.
