Aleksandar Vuciq is the man who destabilises the Balkans, and he has learned that from his mentor Milosevic. So has Ivana Stradner, a research associate of the Foundation for the Protection of Democracy in Washington, said, adding that the domestication policy never works.
It has listed some facts which it says uses Serbian intelligence to present their leader as pro-European.
1. They convince some figures in the West that Vucciki only cares about the dollar and that the economy is key.
2. Forward the message “Let's forget about the 1990s and think about future co-operation”, which is music for Western ears.
3. Destroy the pro-Western opposition and encourage extreme right groups so that Vucic looks like a moderate “lider” in the eyes of the West (just as Putin just came to power).
Deception is extremely important for the Serbian security doctrine, and Vuciq learned how to speak to the West, Stradner said, an expert on hybrid warfare, Russian propaganda and dezinformation.
They also like to target big egos in the West and treat them as useful idiots.
Unfortunately, many politicians in the West do not understand Belgrade. Some, like Britain, understand this, but they cannot do much because they have neither carrot nor staff. Also, they have no idea what to do with Vuciqi because there is no opposition”, Stradner points out.
“With Russian war in Ukraine, the threat of China, chaos in the Middle East, I am not surprised,” stresses Stradner, “that few pay attention to what is happening in the Balkans. Even in the early 1990s, when we had a uniform world, the West was delayed and divided for a long time”.
Many policymakers do not understand ideology, culture, identity policies in the Balkans and feel that dollars are all that matters.
“Wait May 5th, when Vuciq, Dodik and the Serbian Orthodox Church will declare the Serbian “world”. Western policymakers will probably say "no more worries," it's just nationalism for the local audience. “Vuciq is our son and we can control Dodik”, Stradner warned.
