The rare 4.8-degree earthquake that hit New Jersey's north on Friday was the third strongest earthquake that hit the state, according to US Geological Service data.
Friday morning's earthquake was also the strongest since 1783, writes CNN.
Two quakes of 5.1 magnitude are the only strongest earthquakes in New Jersey, 1755 and the other in 1783.
Both earthquakes occurred before New Jersey became a state in December 1787.
Earthquakes in New Jersey and in the region are rare. There have been only 24 earthquakes in New Jersey since 1700.
