The earthquake, which caused a power blackout in the capital of Taipei, occurred at 7 hours and 58 minutes at a local hour at a depth of 15.5km off the southern coast of Taiwan, state seismological service announced.
Television stations broadcast the images of buildings swaying in the densely populated eastern town of Hualien, near the era of the quake. Taiwan's Centre for Science and Technology (CST) said people and vehicles were blocked in the Dachingshi tunnel.
Japan's Earthquake Center reported that several small tsunamis had reached the South Okinawa Prefecture and later turned off the tide warning. The Philippines seismological Agency also issued a warning to residents of coastal areas and urged them to take refuge in higher ground. Meanwhile, the tsunami warnings have been suspended.
The quake was felt in Shanghai, China, and eyewitnesses said. Chinese media report that they have also felt in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in the province of Fujian. The results are still being felt in Taipei, with at least 25 so far, residents said. More than 87,000 families were left without electricity, and high-speed railway trains were stopped.
Southern Taiwan Science Park, which is home to an important semi-compliance producer, reported that companies were functioning normally. And that giant technology announced that production is going on over and over.
The state news agency said it was the strongest quake since 1999, when Taiwan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that killed about 24,000 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 homes.
