Antony Blinken was speaking as a Hamas delegation discussed the new media-brokered proposal from Egypt and Qatar, sent out in to foreign media, Telegrafi.
And a source close to the talks told the BBC that they were careful “optimists”.
The proposal includes a 40-day ceasefire in exchange for freeing hostages and allowing the return of displaced families to the north of Gaza.
It reportedly also includes new formulas for restoring calm meant to satisfy Hamas' bid for a permanent ceasefire.
Hamas' delegation has now left Cairo and will return with a written response to the proposal, Egypt's state television Al Qahera said.
Israel launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas in response to the group's cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7th, during which nearly 1,200 people were killed and another 253 were taken hostage.
More than 34,480 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
