Three law enforcement officers were killed and four others were injured in the North Carolina town of Charlotte, and a suspect was found dead, the state police said Monday.
Police Department chief Charlotte-Maklenburg, Johnny Jennings, said at a news conference that the three officers who were killed were part of a federal team consisting of officers from several numerous agencies.
“Today is an absolutely tragic day for the town of Charlotte and for the bodies of order”, said police chief Jennings. “Today we lost heroes who worked to keep our community safe”, he said.
The killed officers had gone to arrest an ex-condemned for illegal possession. They arrived at the apartment where the suspect was located and he opened fire on the officers, said Mr. Jennings.
They responded to the fire by killing the suspect in the backyard. Then in the direction of the officers it opened from the inside of the house
After a tense exchange, a team of SWAT special forces entered the house and banned two inside.
Mr. Jennings said he believed at least one of them had shot the officers. In addition to the three officers killed, Jennings said four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department that went to the scene were shot. One officer is in critical condition, the other three are in stable condition. / VOA
