Miroslav Lajcak may not be forever mediating the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia as the European Union's special envoy.
From Brussels they have neither denied nor confirmed that Lajcak from September will become the EU ambassador to Switzerland, as reported a few days ago.
Peter Stano, the EU's chief spokesman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told Gazeta Express that they do not comment on speculations in the media, but added there will be no imminent change of EU delegation heads worldwide. He indicated, however, that the next regular rotation, which is expected to take place in September, will include delegation chiefs and vice-presidents.
As a general rule, we do not engage in gossip and comment on media speculation for EU personnel. When it comes to appointing EU ambassadors, there are very clear parameters: The process leading to the appointment of an ambassador is internal and non-public in line with the existing diplomatic practice”, Stano said in a written reply.
The procedure, set out for the ambassadorial appointment, envisions that following the adoption of names from the College (=European Commissionʹ College of Commissioners), the High Representative will make his decisions on concrete appointments. Each EU ambassador appointed will have to get the host country's approval as a precondition for advancing its post/her” procedure, he added.
The EU will announce changes to diplomatic posts only after this procedure is completed.
When this entire procedure is completed, we will issue names and appointments. There is no imminent change of mayors in our delegations worldwide. The next regular routine, which will include delegation chiefs and delegation vice-presidents, is scheduled in only six months, in September”, Stano said.
On September 1st, Miroslav Lajcak will launch his mandate as EU ambassador to the Swiss capital, Bern, Radio Free Europe reported on Friday. His mandate as special envoy for Kosovo- Serbia ends in late August.
After European elections to be held in June, it will also be decided who will be the new chief of European diplomacy, which will succeed Josep Borrell.
