In two annual State Department reports on human rights practices in Kosovo, in 2022 and 2023, serious government corruption is first mentioned.
Kosovo's government has been highly criticised for this, and left, this week was asked to discuss it in the Assembly, but power voted against it. How did Prime Minister Albin Kurti view these two reports?
According to this year's report, there is Serious government corruption, Although, the government has taken reliable steps “but inconsistent” to prosecute officials may have committed human rights violations.
“Important human rights issues included reliable reports of: serious problems with judicial independence; serious restrictions on freedom of expression and media freedom, including violence or violent threats against journalists; Serious Government Corruption; broad gender-based violence, including domestic violence or invasive partner; and crimes involving violence or threats of violence targeting ethnic minorities or other marginalised communities. The government took reliable but unconsistent steps to identify, investigate, prosecute and punish officials who may have committed human rights violations.” )It says in the report.
Kurti for 2022 report
Even in the report released last year, it was mentioned “Serious government corruption”. Kurti had indicated that she would take national remarks and criticism seriously.
We do the best we can, we spare neither the will nor the effort nor the knowledge we have. During these two years Kosovo has scored great progress, whether we are where we want to be, not yet. But all ministries, as we mark the two-year anniversary in government this week, make the best possible. We will also take very seriously the criticism given to us and treat them with precision.” He had expressed himself.
Kurti for 2023 report
In an interview for “DW”One of the questions asked to the prime minister these days was this:
“You said Kosovo is one of the countries where human rights and rule of law are the most advanced in the region. In the latest U.S. Department of State report, however, serious problems of the independence of judicial institutions and media integration are discussed. How do you comment on the report?
Kurti says if reports of several other organisations were cited, Kosovo” would be praised.
There is also criticism for us, of course, but if you look at the 2019 report, today Kosovo has tremendous progress and What I'm surprised is that in the U.S. State Department report, Freedom House was not quoted as Transparency International, and if cited, Kosovo would have to be praised.”
