After Denmark, Belgium proposes building a prison in Kosovo

After Denmark, even Belgium has come up with the idea of building a prison in Kosovo where the Belgian state would bring prisoners without documents to serve the sentence. Belgian MP Theo Francken has said that idea from the “party. N-VA” in an interview for the newspaper “Het Niewsblad”. According to MP Francken, this idea fits in [...]

According to MP Franken, this idea fits perfectly with the ban on asylum, which his party has long demanded.

MP Francken's proposal is included in the N-VA election manifest. He also sees it as a solution to prison design.

Belgian media write that Belgian prison staff will be happy for such an idea, however, how feasible?

An-Sophie Vanhouche, professor of criminology at VUB, has eased expectations regarding this idea. Especially if the comparison is made with Denmark, because the Denmark-Kosovo agreement has not been fully developed.

The “Burg itself has already been built. However, many things have to be adjusted and many remain unclear,” shows Vanhouche from the conversations she had with her Danish colleagues in February.

Building an object is quite simple, transferring people to Kosovo is not, she says.

The detainees do not just want to move to another location. Just because they were convicted doesn't mean they don't preserve their rights.”, she said.

Vanhouche has even raised questions about whether human rights can be guaranteed in Kosovo prisons.

This is Denmark's first problem. Many lawyers do not consider this feasible. ”, she added.
