Chokri Beliid, then leader of the People's Front coalition, was killed with firearms in his car near his home in Tunis in February 2013.
His murder, the first in Tunisia after decades, sparked mass protests and affected the resignation of the then Tunisian prime minister.
Belaid, a leftist politician, had been a fierce critic of the Islamic party, Ennahda, who led the government at the time, accusing him of ignoring the violence of extremists against secularists.
His supporters blame the Islamic party for extremely comfortable access to extremists after its dependence.
Those criticisms and subsequent murders that year caused a political crisis in Tunisia.
Authorities blamed Islamic extremists for Bellaid's murder.
Twenty-three people were charged in the case of his murder, whose investigation and trial lasted many years.
On Wednesday, five defendants were acquitted, while sentences ranging from two to 120 years in prison were pronounced on others. rel
