According to statistics from the Bank of Albania, tourism is currently Albania's largest export and the main source of currency entering the country. The data shows that over the past year the tourism sector left the Albanian economy with a net currency deficit of 1.8 billion euros. That figure is the difference between the income foreigners spend on tourism in Albania and the expenses Albanians make on their trips abroad. According to the BSH, during 2023 Albanians spent 2.3 billion on travel and tourism outside Albania.
The growth of tourism, according to the balance of payments, is the main reason it is lowering the country's current account deficit by bringing the current account almost to neutral balance. Last year, the country's current deficit -- the index measuring the difference between the currency coming out of Albania and what enters the country -- resulted in only 190m euros, or less than 0.5 percent of total national production.
This is the lowest historical figure and current deficit since the fall of the communist system, and according to the BSH is the reason for strengthening the money against the euro.
