United States Intelligence Agency in a report released on Monday, it has warned that there could be a threat in the Western Balkans so the region could be an epither of interethnic violence.

The report refers to recent events, such as the armed attack on Banjska, where police Officer Africa Bunnjak was killed, and the tensions of May 2023, where clashes between KFOR and Serb protesters in northern Kosovo left dozens of peacekeeping forces wounded.

The Western Balkans may be facing an elevated risk of localized interethnic violence during 2017. [...] The clashes between Serbian nationalists and Kosovo authorities have led to death and injuries, including the injuries of NATO peacekeepers in 2023”, were said in the report, isolating Russia's efforts to increase tensions.

The nationalist “Liders are likely to exacerbate tension for their political advantage, and foreign actors will reinforce and exploit ethnic differences to increase or protect their regional influence or prevent greater integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union (BE) or Euro-Atlantic institutions”, the report alarms away.

American expert Daniel Serwer commented on the report, which has distributed on the platform “X”, analyst for Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans at the Institute of New Europe, Jacob Bielamowitz.

Serwer says everyone knows who this threat can come from, citing the ongoing attacks of local Serbs in the north as well as the terrorist attack on Bansjka.

This is wrong. An incident was a Serbian attack on NATO troops. In a separate incident, Kosovo police successfully banned a Serbian plot aimed at offering justification for a Serbian military advancement in Kosovo. There is an aggressor in northern Kosovo. We need to know which”, Serwer wrote.

Even politicalologist and University of Graz professor Florian Bieber, who is an expert on the Balkans, has said Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq is not interested in a sustainable solution with Kosovo, as he prefers open conflict.

In an interview for Telegrafi, Bieber says there must be a new government in Serbia without Vuciqi at the helm, and a strong international boost in order to reach a final agreement.

Austrian expert emphasises that Serbia has become more hostile to Kosovo and the West since Vuciq came to power and his media are promoting anti-Western and anti-Kosovo news every day.

Viewing political currentity, the university professor adds that the agreements reached between Serbia and Kosovo would have to be signed officially and made public binding documents.

Asked whether Kosovo is threatened by a similar Banjska attack, Bieber said there may be threats of Serbs at the border, but even bigger incidents testing NATO's determination to protect Kosovo in a certain way.

Former US State Department official James Hooper also considers the Balkans a danger, given the current situation in Ukraine.

The European political-military arena, part of which are Kosovo and Serbia, is becoming increasingly dangerous as the war in Ukraine continues and the US presidential elections are approaching. That is why Kurt must decide how to inject a greater emergency need into the diplomatic process. If Russia is not forced to lose in Ukraine, Moscow will cast a larger shadow in the Balkans and will likely treat Kosovo and other countries close to it as small fruits that could reap at minimal risk, including removing accounts with Serbia for its help to Ukraine. Thus, as I have stressed, time is critical to preserving Kosovo's interests. Kurti must take the lead in researching the reshaping of US and EU dialogue and general approach to Balkan diplomacy, which will require more self-discipline and imagination than he has yet demonstrated”, Hooper told Television.
