This call was made by European Union Ambassador (BE) to the UN Council for Human Rights in Geneva, Lotte Knudsen, on behalf of 27 EU member states and 16 other countries, including Canada, Great Britain, the United States and Ukraine.
“We are angry with the death of Russian politician Alexei Navalny, for whom the president [Vladimir] is primarily responsible. Putin and Russian authorities”, Knudsen said.
“Russia must certainly allow independent and transparent international investigation of the circumstances of its sudden death”, she added.
Navalny, the biggest and most vocal critic of President Putin within Russia, died at the age of 47 in a Arctic prison on February 16th, prompting accusations by his supporters that he was killed.
\Kremlin has denied having a role in the death of the opposition leader, who was buried in Moscow on Friday.
Russia's Detective Committee says it has launched a procedural investigation into the death of Navajo, while the Kremlin has said it does not respond to EU requirements.
