The security situation in the Balkan region is estimated to be very sensitive.
The senior policy director for the Centre for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, John Erath, says the West should raise its attention in the region because the situation can escalate by nationalist rhetoric.
Weeks ago in the report published by American intelligence, there may be ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans during 2024.
The sensitive security situation is estimated to be in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in northern Kosovo.
On the other hand, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has not ruled out the possibility of Serbia attacking him again in the country's north.
That the situation is very serious in the Balkans says even American expert John Erath.
The security situation is very serious in the region, so the Western attention must be increased so that the situation does not escalate. Just remember what happened during the 1990s, what fierce wars took place in the region. It all happened because of nationalism. There is no way to allow such tragedies to repeat themselves. The key to the region's security is for Kosovo and Serbia to recognise each other. The United States cannot maintain peace in the region without close co-operation with leaders of Balkan countries”, estimates John Erath high policy director for the Centre for Control and Nonproliferation of Weapons.
Senior policy director for the Centre for Control and Non-proliferation, John Erath, has linked developments in the Balkans to Russia's war on Ukraine.
According to him, if Russia marks success at the end of the war with Ukraine, then a dangerous precedent will be set.
The “Bota has become unpredictable and we have a very serious war going on between Russia and Ukraine. If Russia is allowed to achieve little success against the neighbouring state, then it will be a bad signal for the world, because it will move other countries to think about using force instead of diplomacy. So I think it's very important that Russia be banned, and we all have a responsibility to help Ukraine”, Erath says.
Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, recently has openly threatened that at a favourable moment Serbia could even attack Kosovo.
