British Ambassador to Serbia Edward Ferguson has said the North Ireland model may be one of the possible solutions to a compromise in Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
Commenting on British envoy for the Western Balkans Stuart Peach's statement that Northern Ireland's model may be a possible solution to dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, the British ambassador to Serbia said that, as he himself is from Northern Ireland, he can confirm that this agreement has benefited all communities in Northern Ireland.
“
Another interesting detail about Northern Ireland. The whole process was run from top to bottom and “from bottom-lart”. NGOs, especially those of women, played a key role in encouraging the agreement and ensuring that the peace agreement would benefit ordinary people, not just political leaders. As for the situation in the Balkans, the good news is that Belgrade and Pristina agreed on what should be done last year in Ohrid”, Ferguson says.
He stresses that the problem is insufficient progress in terms of implementation.
“We have seen considerable progress on several issues. We welcomed the agreement on recognition of plates and customs seals as well as the use of energy. However, both sides have been slow in meeting the broader obligations they have received. For example, Kosovo has not yet formed the Association of Serb-run municipalities, while Serbia continues to oppose Kosovo's membership in international organisations”, he says.
The British diplomat also welcomed the Kosovo Government's decision regarding the Decani Monastery.
“We believe that Kosovo should implement the pledges made long ago for the formation of the Serb majority municipalities' association. At the same time, we welcome the Kosovo government's decision to introduce 25 hectares of land belonging to the Decani Monastery. Britain has long encouraged this step in co-operation with the Government of Pristina and the KPS. We are pleased that this issue has finally been resolved”, British Ambassador Edward Ferguson has said. /Klankosova.tv.
