Borrell seeks immediate truce in Gaza

European Union foreign policy chief (BE), Josep Borrell, has called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas ʹ the group declared terrorist by the United States and the EU at the Gaza Strip. “I join [American] Vice President Kamala Harris' call for a truce [...]

I join [American] Vice President Kamala Harris's call for an immediate truce in Gaza. Then, there should be no obstacle to a Security Council resolution on this”, Borrell wrote on the social X network.

He stressed that it is time for the UN Security Council to act, adding that “Haris rightly said that many people were killed and urged Israel to allow unhindered humanitarian access”.

Earlier in the day, US Vice President Kamala Harris urged Hamas to reconcile for an immediate six-week ceasefire, meanwhile insist on Israel doing more to increase aid shipments to Gaza.

Its statements are among the most severe made by a senior U.S. government leader so far in terms of war between Israel and Hamas, which began in October last year.

“Given the high degree of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire”, Harris said during an event in Alabama's Selma. The “on the table is a deal and, as we say, Hamas must be reconciled to the deal. Let a truce be reached”.

People in Gaza are starving. Conditions are inhuman and we must act... The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase aid shipments. There's no rationale”, she said.

A day earlier, a Hamas delegation went to Cairo to participate in the last round of peace talks, but it is unclear whether any progress has been made in the talks.

Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israel had boycotted the talks after Hamas rejected his request to draft a list with the name of hostages still alive.

Washington insists that a ceasefire enter into force in early Ramadan, starting in a week.

Such a ceasefire would last six weeks, following a shorter one week ceasefire last November. Tens of hostages held by Hamas would be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners found in Israeli prisons.

Israel's deadly war in the Palestinian enclave began after Hamas ' members rushed south of Israel on October 7th, killing 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and kidnapping 250 hostages.

More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since then, according to Palestinian health authorities from Israel's air, sea and land offensive, which has caused great devastation in enclaves. /Rel
