Village schools risk closing in absence of pupils

The number of students in pre-university education year after year is marking a decline, where this phenomenon is more evident in rural schools in different municipalities in the country. According to the Ministry of Education data compared to the 2021/22 school year in this school year, there are nearly 14,000 fewer students. Officials [...]

Education Ministry officials in a more written response to Radio Kosovo have announced one of the factors affecting the decline in the number of students is the decline in nighthood.

In the 2021/22 school year in pre-university education, a total of 327 thousand and 676 students. In the 2022/23 school year, there is a drop in the number of students with a total of 318 thousand and 947 students. In this school year, however, a decline in the number of students in pre-university schools has been observed, with a total of 314 thousand and 006 students” following the education ministry in this school year.

That one factor affecting the decline in the number of students is the decline in nightiness and the connoisseurs of the field of education.

Dukagjin Pupovci in an answer to Radio Kosovo said the factors that are affecting the decline in the number of students at the country level are the decline of nightiness, migration and migration that have marked growth in recent years.

“Pics that first is the drastic decline of nightiness. Considering that last year there were only 22 thousand births in Kosovo, where Kosovo's Statistics Agency is recently counting the births of Kosovo citizens abroad, it is simply reducing the number of children. Another factor is village-city migration and another factor is migration”, he points out.

According to Pupovci, as a result of village-city migration, many schools in rural areas are at risk of closing.

The range of students is causing many village schools to lock up. Even now we see that in rural areas the number of residents is much smaller, because they have moved from there and the number of children is always smaller”, he said.

Tens of schools in Kosovo, mainly in rural areas, have been closed in recent years, and many other schools in Kosovo are functioning with fewer than 10 students in class.
