Convention U n EFA's this Thursday is expected to develop in an extremely tense atmosphere. The European Court of Justice's decision in favour of the Superleague and Alexander Cefer's call for a reform of the statute that would allow him to extend his mandate until 2031 will be the main topics of discussion.
All conventions are important, but some attract more attention than others. This is the case with the 48th Common Congress of U. EFA, which is currently under way in Paris. The Supreme Governing Organization U n EFA is gathering after recent obstacle to U's interests EFA from the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which ruled that UEFA had misused its dominant position to prevent any secessionary initiative and create a rival race for the Champions League.
These developments have created an uncomfortable atmosphere among 55 member associations gathered at the Maison de La Mutualé conference centre in the French capital. Zvonimir Boban's resignation from his post as football director on January 25th exposed a rift within the organisation caused by Slovenian maneuvers Alexander Cefer.
The proposed amendment to the statute would imply that the three mandate limit defined in the text would not apply to the first president of the U. EFA, after he entered into force after he had already taken office as president of UEFA. In other words, the statuteic provisions would not be implemented financially for his first mandate, as the beginning of that mandate preceded the properly signed reform that set the limit of presidential mandate.
Another possible reform is removing the 70-year-old border for election or re-election at the Executive Committee. Technically, this is reform, as it significantly changes access to position. Despite the name set out in regulations, it is clear and requires a majority named, not a simple majority like the rest of the decisions made by Congress, Kosova Prees follows.
