Former Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, on the 16th anniversary of Kosovo's Independence, has spoken of circumstances in declaring the country's independence.
“I took office at a sensitive time, replacing President Rugova. I have felt a concern and, at times, any dilemma for declaring independence, on the forms of resolving the” issue, said former President Sejdiu, while mentioning Tirol and Hong Kong.
But he added that for the final solution to the Kosovo issue, there has been full security from the US and the QUINT states.
Furthermore, former President Sejdiu also commemorated his context with the former Finnish president, the chief negotiator on the Kosovo issue, Martti Ahtisaari, as he recalled UN Resolution 1244, but also obstacles on the part of Russia and China.
Kosovo's “Independence has been announced in full co-ordination with international allies”, former President Sejdiu said, while citing signals from former US President Bush, and French Sarkozy. He said he has conveyed and studied the Kosovo independence process in detail, remembering even the additional 100 days, for reasons, he added, the depletion of arguments that opposed Kosovo's independence, that Ahtisaari's plan not be compromised.
The most challenging post-independence remarks, Sejdiu cited several examples, one of them was the number of recognitions, the drafting of recognition requirements, then for KFOR's stance in the country, etc.
“There has been a very good walk in the quality of recognitions from different countries for Kosovo, but of importance was knowing neighbouring countries, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro”, the former president Sejdiu stressed, while citing the number of recognitions, about 70 recognitions.
Furthermore, he also spoke of the burning of border gates in the north of the country by Serbs, but also of different propaganda of the influx of Kosovo Serbs, etc., which, he noted, the response has been cautious.
Among other things, former President Sejdiu spoke of the country's Constitution, a new constitution on the basis of Ahtisaari's plan, as well as the approval of the flag, the anthem of the state, etc., then the International Court, which, according to him, sealed Kosovo's independence as another important moment after Kosovo independence, until it explained that it has been a boomerang towards Serbia.
