US Vice President Kamala Harris has said on Friday that the United States is working to confirm the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Russia's vocal critic, Vladimir Putin.
A local Russian Federal Penitentiary Service department said Friday at noon that Navajo died in prison.
Harris, speaking from the Munich Conference in Germany, said that if his death is confirmed, there will be another indication of President Putin's brutality.
This is a terrible news we're working on to confirm. If confirmed, this would be a major indication of Putin's brutality. Whatever confession they have [Russia], let me be clear: Russia is responsible. Later we will comment more on the matter”, she said.
The report on the death of Navalny has sparked anger and condemnation by world leaders who have said the Kremlin critic paid “the highest price of” for his courage to speak against the leadership of the state.
In the Federal Prison Service's statement, Navalny felt bad, after walking on February 16th and then losing consciousness.
All measures to bring him back to life were taken, but they did not produce positive results. The ambulance doctors pronounced the prisoner dead. The cause of death is being determined”, said in the Russian Service statement, notice that it has not been possible to confirm independently.
The Russian state-controlled media have also cited this statement, reporting that Navajo, 47, is dead.
State media, T The ASS, quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been informed of reports concerning the death of Navajo and that he had no information about his death.
But, Navalny's media secretary, Kira Yarmysh, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Kremlin critic's team, has no confirmation of his death.
The Federal Prison Service in Jamalo-Nenets County is spreading news about Alexei Navajo's death at IK-3 prison. We still have no confirmation of this news. Navalny's lawyer will be there, and once we have information, we'll call you”, she wrote.
Lawyer Leonid Solovyov told Gazeta Novaya that at the request of the family, he will not comment on the reports on the death of Navalny.
With Alexei Navajo's family decision, I won't comment on anything. Alexei met a lawyer on February 14th. Everything was fine”, Solovyov was quoted as saying.
Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin, has been held in the Russian prison since 2021 on charges described by many as politically motivated.
In August, Navajo was found guilty of establishing and funding an extremist organisation, which he has always denied, and was sentenced to 19 years in additional prison.
He had only been sentenced to nine years in prison for violations of parole, for fraud and contempt of the court. / REL/
