Netanyah under pressure to accept agreement with Hamas

New polls show Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah's support is increasingly declining. As reported by Jerusalem's Voice correspondent Linda Gradstein, most of the Israelites surveyed say that he must leave power after the war ends. A possible new arrangement for the release of 132 Israelites [...]

A possible new agreement on the release of 132 Israelites who are continuing to be held hostage by Hamas in Gaza for nearly four months would likely force Israel to end the war without the destruction of the militant group.

Prime Minister Netanyahu speaks with conviction that this will not happen.

We will not end the war without reaching goals. This means the destruction of Hamas, the return of all our hostages, and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel. We will not withdraw our forces from the Gaza Strip and release thousands of terrorists. None of this will happen. What's gonna happen? Full victory”, Mr. Netanyahu said.

As the war continues without an end to the horizon, a growing number of Israelis are becoming more vocal in their support for hostage families, putting pressure on Mr. Netanyahu to accept the terms of the hostage release agreement.

We think there should be a change or revision of the current plan so that a hostage release agreement can be reached. If the prime minister had the son in Gaza, he might have thought differently about the price he would be willing to pay”, says Israeli-American Ruby Chen, whose son is held hostage by Hamas.

On the other hand, members of the far-right extreme in the government of Prime Minister Netanyah say they will leave the coalition and bring down the government if he ends the battle with Hamas, while the militant group continues to control Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyah is also under pressure from US President Joe Biden for reaching an agreement that would create a Palestinian state in the West Coast and the Gaza Belt, under the control of what American officials say should be “Auttories revived by Palestinian”.

Israeli analysts say the various demands at home and abroad are challenging for Mr. Netanyahu, Israel's longest-lived prime minister. Most expect new elections in Israel after the end of the war, or even earlier, if the war continues long.

It is clear that there is too much pressure on Prime Minister Netanyah to set a time for holding elections. But, as we know, in the Middle East, temporary agreements are not sustainable, whether in political, diplomatic or strategic relations”, Says Dan Dicker of the Jerusalem Centre for Public Relations.

Recent polls show that only 15 percent of Israelites want Mr. Netanyah to remain prime minister after the war. Many say they have lost confidence in his government, following the failures of intelligence and security authorities to prevent Hamas' attacks on 7 October.

“Shansets for Netanyah to have political future with all these differences are very low”, says Amowtz Asa-El from the “Institute Shalom Hartman”.

Israel's leader has so far refused to take responsibility for the October 7th attacks. But analysts say many Israelites think he is responsible and that it is time to leave power. / VOA/
