Namibia's president, Hagge Geingob, has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.
Vice President Nangolo Mbumba announced that Geingob had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
On his side was his dear wife, Madame Monica Geingos and his children,” said Mr. Mumba in a statement.
The 82-year-old leader was diagnosed with cancer and discovered his diagnosis to the public last month.
His office announced that he would travel to the US for treatment but would return to Namibia on February 2nd.
Geingob became president in 2015 and was carrying out his second mandate.
He underwent an aorta surgery last year, and in 2014 he discovered that he had survived prostate cancer.
Namibia will hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November.
The ruling Swapo party, which has been in power since independence in 1990, has elected Mrs. Nandi-Nwaitwatwath as presidential candidate.
She is also currently the deputy prime minister of Namibia and will become the country's first female president if she wins. / BBC
