In an interview for REL, Kupchan has said that despite the fact that the Ohrid Agreement, brokered by the European Union, is on the table, relations between Kosovo and Serbia appear to be turning back and are not moving forward.
He has criticised the prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, of whom he says he has taken some unnecessary provocative actions.
I think Prime Minister Kurti is doing some unnecessary provocative actions. It was the issue of IDs, of license plates, of installing [Albanian] mayors in the north, for whom a very small percentage of residents have voted... now tells Serbs that they cannot use dinars anymore, there is only one official currency, and that is the euro.
Is such things justified? Yes, because any sovereign country should be able to say we have our currency, our euro... or have a responsible authority for issuing plates.
But, it seems Kurt is taking these actions by playing with a nationalist card, which makes the progress of the Ohrid Agreement” difficult, Kupchan said.
